I am officially floral-obsessed — especially since I discovered the FLWR Shop in East Nashville (rather, ever since Bradley discovered them and sent me the most beautiful delivery!). Not only are the arrangements incredibly gorgeous, but the chic style and positive energetic vibes I get from placing them in my office or at home in my apartment can truly turn any day into a vibrant one. According to science, my intuitive inklings may not be far-fetched. Research has consistently linked indoor flowers with well-being — cognitive performance and mood can both be improved significantly with the sight and smell of florals. Not to mention, the incredible amount of compliments I receive whenever I have an arrangement brightening up my office cube (which in turn makes my work day that much more magical!).
I stopped by the FLWR shop this past Friday to pick up a gorgeous pink arrangement for my friend’s birthday — and decided that I, myself, would benefit from beautiful blossoms to shake the gray and gloomy January weather we’ve been experiencing here in Music City. The bouquet that Alex Vaughan (co-owner) designed for me was filled with the most beautiful purple, plum and mauve hues — a stunning display of Vanda orchids, anemones, sweet peas, and parrot tulips.
My curiosity overcame me — and I wanted to learn more about the story and inspiration behind this darling FLWR Shop — a charming sanctuary east of downtown — owned and operated by the passionate and friendly husband / wife team. And so, I sat down with Quinn Kiesow (co-owner) to inquire…
What inspired you to open your own FLWR Shop?
After working with flowers for nearly a decade, we had both had learned a lot about the industry and the art of floral design. Alex had developed a style that she could truly call her own, so we wanted to have a business and brand to truly call our own. While opening FLWR Shop, it was important that the space oozed with style. We both believe that the spaces we live and work in have a serious impact on the way we feel. We wanted to go to work every day feeling inspired to create.
Why did you choose Nashville to open your shop?
We realized a few years ago that we wanted to farm flowers someday. We did a lot of research on climate, water, land and bioregions, and Tennessee seemed like an ideal place to grow. Back in 2010, we noticed that Nashville was beginning to take flight – and decided it would be a great city to ‘plant our roots,’ quite literally! We purchased a small piece of land west of the city and spent a few years paying off the mortgage from New York. By the time we moved here, we became passionate about opening up a shop.
What do you love most about owning your own business?
We have always valued autonomy in our lives. The freedom to make our own decisions, even if it involves trial and error, is very important to us. We have also realized that creating a positive work environment is challenging, but worth every effort. The people we work side-by-side with every day are awesome – we have truly enjoyed developing our team.
What are your favorite flowers to work with this time of the year?
January is tough because nothing is growing locally. In the spring and fall, we love working with local flowers, but this time of year, it’s important to have good relationships with wholesalers that can bring in flowers from South America and Holland. This is rose season for us, and we love garden roses (right now we have some gorgeous David Austin varieties). We are currently going crazy about the amazing Italian ranunculus that we are getting in — they are incredibly beautiful flowers!
